Transport

Transport plays a crucial role in the lives of Singaporeans. It must be able to meet the diverse needs of our people and the best way to do so is to conserve energy by being energy-efficient.

  1. Most efficient and sustainable form of motorised transport.

  2. A car carrying only the driver uses 9X energy used by a bus and 12X that used by a train on a per passenger.

  3. Fares are calculated based on distance travelled (by a kilometer basis).

  4. Be involved in improving the environment by taking public transport now!

If you find it necessary to use a car for your mobility needs, you can still contribute to improve energy efficiency in the following ways:

b. Fuel Economy Label

- helps people make a well-informed decision by choosing more fuel efficient models

- help car buyers choose more fuel-efficient vehicles during purchase

- information on the vehicle’s fuel economy is pasted on it

- the lower the number on the label, the better

- cuts cost and reduces pollution to the air

d. Non-Motorised Transport

- encouraged as they do not consume any external energy

- eg. walking, cycling

c. Carbon Emissions-Based Vehicle Scheme

- look out for vehicles with lower emission when purchasing a vehicle to enjoy a rebate under the Carbon Emissions-Based Vehicle Scheme

- motivates people to choose more energy

-efficient vehicles that produce lesser emissions to save money upfront

a. Park & Ride Scheme

Allows motorists to switch to the more energy efficient public transport for part of their journeys in a convenient way.

HOW?

1) Drive to a selected P&R site located near an MRT station, bus interchange or a bus stop

2) Park your vehicle there

3) Continue your journey, hassle-free by bus or MRT

e. Intra-Town Cycling

- promoted by LTA through the provision of off-road cycling path network in selected HDB towns

- the network provides cyclists with connectivity from their homes to MRT stations, bus interchanges and key amenities such as shopping malls or parks

Our Views :

Everyone has their own part to play in energy conservation, not only the government, the public sector and companies. If everyone contributes by helping to reduce the amount of energy they use through various means, Singapore’s energy consumption will be much lower than the current level. Not only will this benefit the environment as it will result in lesser pollution to the air, Singapore herself will benefit as well, from the money saved from producing lesser energy to meet the peoples’ energy consumption. It is important that people are aware that this issue will greatly impact our fragile environment and thus, do their best to protect our Earth in order to create a sustainable environment for future generations.
